Today’s meeting with Vintage Wine, "Fine Wine Division" sales force.

Poggio Argentiera is a winery in Tuscany’s Maremma.

What’s the Maremma? According to Wikepedia, the Maremma is an area in Italy, consisting of part of southern Tuscany (and partly coincident with province of Grosseto area) and some part of northern Lazio (a bordering region of the province of Viterbo).

Provided with significant natural and environmental resources, Maremma is today one of the best tourist destinations in Italy, where ancient traditions have survived and Tuscan culture is preserved. It is being promoted as a destination for agritourism.

The village Scansano lies within Maremma and is noted for Morellino di Scansano wine, which is vinted from Morellino grapes grown locally.

Poggio Argentiera is one of the most respected wineries in Maremma, and one of the only two producers of Morellino di Scansano that have been awarded with "tre bicchieri".

I know it can look strange, but on of the ways to mesure popularity could be by Google search. These are the results of Poggio Argentiera vs Fattoria le Pupille (one of the most prominent wineries in Maremma)

Recently our Morellino di Scansano Capatosta is been given the Decanter’s Award (Decanter Magazine December Italy Supplement), and has been named Wine of the Month and Best Value in a wine tasting of 186 wines from the Tuscan Coast (that includes Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Lupicaia, and many others very expensive …"’AIAs"), by Decanter Magazine (April 2007 issue).

Our wines are only sold in the best restaurants and wine shops in Italy and abroad. Italy is currently 70 % of our market, and we have been growing an average of 35 % a year in the last three years.

Why should americans find the Morellino di Scansano and Maremma’s wines attractive?

  • this wines are extremely popular in Italy. Nearly every wine bar in Italy has at least a Morellino by the glass. This is what the italians are drinking.
  • this wines are approchable by the american consumers because of their readiness, their uncomplicated pleasentness, the fruit and ripeness that our climate allow the Sangiovese to reach. Price, usually lower than the other important tuscan wines, is a plus.
  • the Morellino is becoming, with vintage 2007, a DOCG (only 34 italian appellation has this status, which is the top of the pyramid of quality in the italian appellation system).
  • Maremma is the up and comung wine area of Italy. In the last 10 years nearly all the big names have invested in Maremma and starting to produce their wines from this area. The Morellino DOC has grwon in the last 7 years from 600 acres to more than 3000 acres,(notwithstanding the fact the the DOC is frozen since the year 2000).

Other reasons to buy wines from Poggio Argentiera:

  • we are family business. Handcrafted wines vs industrial products. We have got vineyards in Maremma. Many labels that we see in the US market are private labels made from an unknown source.
  • our vineyards
  • distribution only in the Horeca market (not supermarkets or discount)
  • nice packagimg (come on, that counts as well…)
  • correct price for the quality (many best values among our press ratings)
  • we are a nice people tooì….. and family is growing….

Bravo Gianpaolo, finalmente qualcuno che promuove in una maniera nuova e dinamica(d’altra parte come i tuoi vini), sulla propria pelle.Importante non è solo fare i vini ma andare poi a berli all’estero,Angelo Gaja lo insegna.   3. Bella presentazione, se ce ne fosse stato bisogno, mi avresti completamente convinto del Morellino di Scansano e di Poggio Argentiera. Spero che le tue solide argomentazioni vengano fatte proprie dagli agenti, che le utilizzino con ristoratori e enotecari, e che a loro volta le utilizzino coi clienti esperti… che le utilizzeranno con gli amici.
