Just arrived in Manhattan. Moving 30 people all together in never easy, but all went reasonably well in the end.

We got to the Hotel (Jolly Hotel Madison Towers, which I find quite good, the largest rooms in Manhattan for the money, plus bilingual ita-eng staff) at 7,30 PM and we were already on a taxi for a little dinner before going to bed.

We went to one of Terry’s of Mondosapore favorites, I think, il Bagatto between 2nd and Av. B. Very nice ambiance, very friendly staff, and very funny to see Luciano Zazzeri of La Pineta e Andrea Menichetti of da Caino tackling with all the italian specialties that the owner Julio kept bringing at the table. And for a drink? Only beer tonight, a good one by the way Sierra Nevada ,I think it’s the name (”pastosa”, has been Luca D’Attoma commento on it).

Tomorrow is coming soon. And the Maremma will be on the stage of 5 of the best Italian restaurants in New York, for five days. More than 30 people came yesterday from Italy, for arguably the largest event that Maremma producers and restaurants ever did abroad. The chefs will go in the morning to the restaurants where they will spend the remaining of the week cooking and making special Maremma dishes. I can imagine the challenge of going in a completely new kitchen, in a new place where everybody speaks a different language, with different ingredients and having to perform right away. It’s a challenge and it takes some courage from their side, I’ll never end telling them how much I appreciate what they are doing.

Stay tuned, day 1 is at San Domenico.

  1. Bravo Gianpaolo.

I am a New Yorker who has been coming to Maremma for over 25 years and has been living here (between Scansano and Montiano) for over a year now. I have been spreading the word about this magical province for a long time. I think what you are doing for the area and its products is great and long overdue. I have eaten in many, if not all, of the restaurants represented in New York and the host restaurants there and think you’ve made superb choices. I have also been a great fan of your wines and many of the others you will sharing this week. My only regret is that I’m not there this week to join in. Although being in Maremma right now is a gift in itself.

I have one question for you: do you have someone working with you on PR in New York? I have been reading about this event online for the past week, but haven’t seen any mention of it in the traditional press that I follow. As I’m sure you know, to make a real impact in NY, a few well placed articles or reviews can make all the difference. I imagine that with all the partners you have in NY, you are taking care of this, but if, by some chance, you have not, I have a few friends who do PR there and I would be happy to get in touch with them to see if they can help.

In any event, in bocca al lupo. I look forward to enjoying the meals vicariously through your postings.

  3. Hi Steve, you are completely right, there’s been a lack of penetration into the traditional press. We do have a PR agency, but they are Italian, not New Yorkers, and I think that this made a difference. Plus, there is a matter of budget, which wasn’t very big for communication, but that could have probably been used better.
I’m sure that next time, if there will be one, we can learn from mistakes.
So sorry that you are not here, and about your friends, I think we could get in touch, even though is probably too late now to get them involved for this time. If you would like to send me their contacts I’d be glad to consider them for the next time.
    Ciao and enjoy.
Grazie Vittorio, mi fa piacere che apprezzi.

    Bloggers never die…

…they just have three children at home during the school holidays. Anyway, here we are back again after this enforced sabbatical, at the European Wine Bloggers Conference . This is really interesting stuff, not least for me who, up until fairly recently, held a robustly ”blog humbug” attitude to this medium. What’s interesting is the […]
