whilst looking for a bouquet to send to send as an anniversary present, I found a super company called The Gluttonous Gardener, which is like Interflora meets Slow Food. So much more original and long lasting than a bunch of fiori, their gifts are boxed plants and trees for anywhere from a downstairs lavatory right up to a large garden. I sent a mulberry bush, which arrived the next day in a lovely box, packed with hessian, and including a pot of mulberry jam and a jar of mulberry syrup. The recipients were , in their words, ‘’so thrilled”, and spent the whole afternoon planning where to plant it whilst munching on mulberry jam sandwich.

For a really flash pressie, they will send a vineyard…well, 20 vines, vine shears and a bottle of burgundy to quaff whilst you wait for your own vintage…now isn’t that a better gift than a bunch of carnations?

  3. @gianna. hi - ah no, I don’t know of any specific company…and I would imagine that there are severe limitations on import/exporting plants , foods etc. How’s this for a good idea though: as an ”in the post” wedding present, a friend sent me 50 packets of seeds so I could grow my own English country garden in Tuscany…most of them simply burnt up in the heat, but the idea was lovely!
